Living with kids can be challenging for so many reasons. One of the biggest concerns that most parents have within their home besides keeping their home safe is keeping it neat and clean. Although it can seem like an impossible task, you can keep your house clean while your kids are still living in the house. Read on for some tips to a clean and organized house. 


Get Rid Of What You Don’t Use


Too much stuff is one of the first problems in a messy home. You need to make a list of every space in your home. See which areas need improvement. Start in those spots to see how much more space you can make. Keep only the essentials. Everything else should be donated or tossed in the trash. If you have more space to get organized, the task of being neat will be even easier to achieve.


Everything Needs A Place


After you get rid of what you don’t use, clutter can still accumulate easily. If you don’t have a system in place to help your kids put things away, chaos will continue to ensue. How do you develop a sense or organization? Group things together. Electronics, batteries, and cords should go together. Different types of toys can have separate bins and containers. Keep blocks with other blocks and crayons with art supplies. Not only will things be more accessible to put away for your kids, but they’ll also be able to find item easier as well. Do you see that you still need a “junk drawer”? You can designate one spot in the house for miscellaneous things that either need a home or are in transition. Just don’t let this space be too big or get out of hand. 


Have A Clean-Up Time In Place


Sometimes, clutter becomes a problem because we don’t make cleaning up a priority. Add cleaning up clutter to your list of what needs to be done on a daily basis. Just as you clean your dirty dishes up from the sink, you should take the time to put items back in their place. Are you a procrastinator? Make sure you keep the importance of cleaning up fresh in your mind. Keeping clutter at bay is a habit that needs to be developed by both you and your kids. As a parent, you can make a game or competition out of clean up time. This contest can help to motivate your kids to learn your organizational systems and keep them in place. 


Keeping a neat house when you have kids isn’t as impossible as it seems when you attack the project from the right angle.

When you stop and think about it, there are a lot of aspects of our lives that need continual organizing. The ideal scenario is to set up an organizing system when you first move into a new home, and then maintain it on a daily or weekly basis. Unfortunately, many people wait to organize their closets, pantries, or home offices until those areas are in a state of utter chaos. By then, the clutter has taken on a life of its own! Not only is it difficult to find things you're looking for, but your frustration can spill over into other aspects of your life. Kitchen Organizing Tips Being organized is the bedrock of a well-managed life. While it's far from a panacea, the results of organizing your home and work space can be far reaching. Take your refrigerator, for example. How many times has perfectly good food been wasted because it was pushed back into a corner and forgotten about until it turned into a "science experiment"? Although refrigerators are designed with organization in mind, it's all too easy to throw vegetables in the meat drawer and haphazardly wrap up leftovers without labeling them. As a side note, if you write the current date on the label, you'll be able to keep track of how long it's been in the fridge and whether it's time to throw it away. (Note: The U.S. Department of Agriculture advises that cooked leftovers be used within four days. Its food safety "window" for raw poultry and ground beef is even shorter: only one or two days.) Whether your goal is to organize your refrigerator, kitchen cabinets, bedroom closets, or garage, the benefits are worth the time and energy. Before getting started, though, it's helpful to make a trip to a local office supply outlet, kitchen retailer, or dollar store to pick up an assortment of small containers, canisters, drawer dividers, a marking pen, and labels. The Benefits of Organizing Your Home Getting started is the hardest aspect of home organizing, but there are many sound reasons for taking the initiative:

  • Improving the appearance of your home rewards you with a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of personal satisfaction.
  • When you organize closets, cabinets, or other storage areas, you'll stumble upon things you thought you misplaced or lost, long ago.
  • You'll get rid of miscellaneous junk and clutter, which will free up space for things you want to save, refer to, or use in the near future.
  • Organizing your household supplies, tools, and kitchen accessories will also prevent you from having to buy replacement items that you already have. Knowing where things are will save you time, money, and aggravation!
Maintaining a Semblance of Order Getting your family to clean and organize their own rooms and work spaces is a separate challenge, but setting a positive example is one of the first steps. In the case of children, clear expectations need to be set and daily routines established. When all else fails, bribery has been know to work, too!

If you've been putting off organizing your closets for months -- if not years -- you're not alone! Since closets are not usually a "high visibility" area of the house, cleaning them often ends up being relegated to the bottom of people's priority lists.

It's easy to postpone tackling the project because you can simply close the door and forget about what a disaster area it's become!

There are, however, several sound reasons for bumping it up on your "to do" list.

  • First of all, you'll probably find valuable things you thought were lost forever. Depending on how long it's been since you last cleaned out your closets, there's a good chance you'll find miscellaneous valuable items ranging from missing gloves and address books to lost photo albums and unopened gifts. There's no end to the possible treasures you could stumble upon in a closet that you haven't organized for a while. You may even find lost items you were considering replacing. In that case, you can save your money or spend it on something else!
  • It's an opportunity to help others. All communities have charitable organizations that distribute warm clothing, shoes, essential kitchen supplies, school backpacks, and other useful items to underprivileged families in your area. By giving away things you no longer need and use, you can accomplish two objectives: clearing out the clutter in your home and helping needy families or organizations in the community.
  • You'll enjoy a sense of accomplishment. On one hand, when you keep putting off a project that you know needs to get done, it creates an underlying feeling of frustration. However, once you get the task underway and completed, you'll feel like you're making progress with your goals and moving forward. (Not only that, but your closets will no longer be an eyesore that cause you to cringe every time you go to grab a jacket or hang up your clothes!)
  • Completing one project helps create momentum for getting started on something else. As Sir Isaac Newton, the famous physicist, stated more than 300 years ago, "A body at rest will remain at rest, and a body in motion will remain in motion unless it is acted upon by an external force.” (Source: Live Science) That principle applies as much to human behavior as it does to inanimate objects. Once you force yourself to get started on a project -- whether it involves organization, cleaning, repair, or home improvement -- you'll discover new-found energy and motivation for other tasks.

While it may seem as if cleaning your closets is a monumental task that makes you feel physically and mentally drained just thinking about it, the hardest part is getting started -- taking those first few steps. By picking one closet to organize and setting aside just an hour or two to do it (and creating a semblance of order), you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish in just one session!
